The Avantone Pro CLA-10A Active Studio Monitor System (Pair, Black) combines the acclaimed AV10MHF and AV10MLF drivers from the CLA-10, matched with the same robust cabinet construction, resulting in a highly refined active monitor. Unique to the CLA-10A is its powerful Class A/B amplifier section, designed for those who appreciate classic audio engineering.
Inspired by All Originals
A frequent question about the CLA-10 line is which version of the originals served as inspiration. The answer is simple: all of them. The CLA-10A introduces a completely new feature called the “VTPC” knob, or “Variable Tissue Paper Control.” This innovative control allows users to simulate the tonal characteristics of everything from the Vertical “m” model to the horizontal “Studio” version and all points in between. With the VTPC, you can tailor the tweeter brightness to perfectly fit your personal preferences, offering unprecedented flexibility and precise control over your sound.
Classic Power Meets Modern Performance
While many two-way active speakers opt for a switch mode power supply and Class D amplifier—to great effect in contemporary designs—Avantone remains committed to traditional amplifier technology. Building on the success of pairing the CLA-10 with the CLA-200 amplifier, the CLA-10A Active monitor features a linear power supply and a muscular 200-watt Class A/B amplifier output. This design does mean the unit is heavier and requires a heatsink, but it absolutely delivers when it comes to sonic performance.
Advanced Amplification Technology
At the heart of the CLA-10A is a monolithic integrated circuit Class A/B amplifier, capable of handling high voltages and delivering significant current. Operating in Parallel Mode with two devices working together, it provides greater output power into low impedance loads and improved thermal performance under demanding conditions. At lower power, total harmonic distortion stands at an impressive 0.005%, and even under rated load, it remains a low 0.1%, easily outperforming typical Class D amplifiers. The amplifier’s circuitry employs BCDII 100/120 technology—a sophisticated blend of bipolar and MOS high-voltage processes—to avoid secondary breakdown phenomena. This allows the CLA-10A to manage high output currents efficiently without complicated external circuitry, all while maintaining the smooth, transparent sound traditionalists expect from a linear amplifier.
Built to the Highest Standards
Powered by a substantial linear supply at +/-40 VDC, the CLA-10A achieves a dependable 200W RMS at 1kHz into 8 ohms. Instead of relying on switch mode power supplies, which can introduce unwanted noise, the CLA-10A employs a classic, heavy-duty toroidal transformer. While many manufacturers have shifted to SMPS and Class D amplification in similar systems, Avantone has intentionally stuck with time-tested technology in order to preserve the legacy sound engineers and artists around the world recognize and trust.
