Description

The ikan Elements Basic Stereoscope kit provides sturdy support for two identical camcorders for stereoscopic 3D production. The rig puts two cheese plates on standard 15mm rods, allowing them to slide closer and farther apart from each other. This enables the adjustment of the interaxial distance between your two cameras, which is crucial for achieving stereoscopic effects at varied distances. (Interaxial distance is the distance from the center of one lens to the center of the second lens.)

To adjust the distance between the cameras, simply turn the thumbscrews to loosen the rod mounts and slide the two cheese plates along the 12 in (30 cm) rails. If the cheese plates are mounted inwardly, such that their edges can touch, and the cameras are mounted nearest to each other on the outer holes on the cheese plates, camera centers can be as close as 36mm. That's quite a theoretical figure, considering the dimensions of even the smallest camcorders. So practically speaking, the width of your cameras and lenses is the only limit to your minimum interaxial distance. This facilitates the creation of an ideal side-by-side stereoscopic rig. Maximum interaxial distance is 15.2 in (38.5 cm), with the cameras mounted to the far outside edges of the cheese plates.

The kit is completely modular, so greater interaxial distances can be achieved by using longer 15mm rods. Most elements tighten, adjust, and remove easily through the use of thumbscrews. All ikan Elements hardware is based on industry-standard connections (15mm rods and 1/4" screws, primarily), so it's a simple matter of adding a part if you want to expand your rig. Major parts are aluminum with a powder-coated black finish.

The Basic Stereoscope rig includes two steel screws with hand-tightening nuts that attach small or medium camcorders to the two cheese plates. The cheese plates screw into 15mm rod mounts, which slide back and forth on the two 12 in-long 15mm rods. In the middle of the rig the two rods thread a third rod mount, which is attached to a Cheese Stick Sr. The Cheese Stick facilitates the attachment of other pieces, such as a tripod mount.
