The lens incorporates three high-precision glass-moulded aspherical elements and a special low dispersion element to deliver excellent optical quality without adding excessive weight. It employs a stepping motor for fast and silent autofocus, making it suitable for capturing video and fast-moving subjects. The lens also has a minimum focusing distance of 4.8" for close-up photography and features a rounded seven-blade diaphragm for a pleasing bokeh effect.
