It works by redistributing ambient light into the darker areas of a scene, which helps to balance the tonal range between highlights and shadows more evenly. As a result, you'll notice increased detail in shadowed regions, while the filter also purposefully keeps flare and halation around highlights to a minimum.
Grade and Effect
This specific filter has a grade of 1/4. Tiffen also offers other grades, including 1/8, 1/2, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. With each step up in grade number, the effect of the filter strengthens to roughly twice its previous intensity. This range allows you to select the ideal level of contrast control for your creative needs.
Construction and Technology
Tiffen manufactures this filter using its proprietary ColorCore technology. This advanced process involves sandwiching the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass, then grinding the assembly flat to an extremely precise tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch.
